Dr. Sarah Shapiro-Ward PhD, CPDT-KA, KPA CTP, CTDI

Sarah is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (Knowledge-Assessed), a Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA CTP) and a Do More With Your Dog Certified Trick Dog Instructor.

Sarah and her Cockapoo, Percy, have been featured on Jimmy Fallon, The Daily Mail UK, and has even been interviewed by NHK Japan for many of the amazing tricks she has clicker trained, such as teaching Percy how to play Connect 4 and Jenga, and even paint on canvas! Additionally, she makes regular appearances on the live call-in show, CBC BC Today, as their resident dog behaviour expert.

Besides tricks, Sarah has successfully helped hundreds of dog owners with issues ranging from new puppy issues to more severe fear and aggression cases.

Before becoming a dog trainer, Sarah was an academic biochemist specialising in the digestion of prebiotics. She completed her Ph.D. in 2015 at the University of Newcastle, UK and continued her research at the University of Victoria, BC as a post doctoral researcher. While she assures us that she is happy to leave the lab behind, she continues to apply her skills of objective analysis, deconstruction and presentation to training scenarios.

Sarah is teaching group classes as well as seeing clients for Private Lessons (all issues) in Vancouver.

Katie Rempel

Katie Rempel joined our instructor team in 2023 after assisting Sarah during group classes. She is working towards her CPDT-KA qualification (fall 2024).

Katie‘s first career was as a Registered Nurse, working at the Mazankowski Heart Institute and the CK Hui Heart Centre in Edmonton. Katie moved to British Columbia and while looking for a position in her field, worked in a dog daycare. It wasn’t long before she decided to pursue a new career with dogs. Katie currently works at a local pet supply shop, Discover Dogs, providing cooperative-care husbandry services, and R+ training resources and gear.

Rockefeller and Birdie are Katie‘s sidekicks and daily inspiration to understand dogs better and meet their needs completely. Her goal is to share science-based, compassionate coaching to clients wanting to make positive long lasting changes in their dog’s behavior.

Katie is currently taking on in-home Private Lessons for Foundation Skills, Puppy Preparation and Socialization, Loose Leash Walking, Co-operative Care and New Rescue Dog Preparation. Katie also teaches group classes at our Mount Pleasant location.

Nadia Langenberg

Nadia joined our instructor team in 2023 and is currently working towards her CPDT-KA qualification. Nadia is taking on in-home Private Lessons for Foundations Skills and Cooperative Care, and also teaches group classes at the Mount Pleasant location.

Nadia found her passion for animal behaviour and training after adopting her current dog, Louie, in 2020. Finding the world of humane and ethical animal training transformed a difficult start to her time with Louie into a collaborative partnership and brought with it a strong interest in animal welfare, enrichment, and behaviour modification.

Alongside a career in engineering and with Louie as a constant inspiration (and the best kind of teacher), Nadia has built her experience with dogs and people as a volunteer at the BC SPCA, where she completed the Fear Free Shelter certification, and as a classroom assistant for a local force free trainer, prior to joining the When Hounds Fly Classroom Assistant Program in 2022.

In her spare time, Nadia enjoys spending time with Louie (especially working on cooperative care and tricks), as well as enjoying the outdoors through running (with a side of mushroom spotting), cycling and skiing in North Vancouver.
